ProteoVilamoura 2026

I would like to sincerely thank the French Proteomics Society (FPS) for awarding me the grant to attend ProteoVilamoura 2026, the Joint Meeting of the Portuguese, Spanish, and French Proteomics Societies, held in Vilamoura, Portugal, from 20–22 May 2026.

The congress offered an excellent overview of current developments in proteomics, ranging from clinical biomarker discovery and extracellular vesicle research to single-cell proteomics, proteogenomics, and emerging mass spectrometry technologies. The scientific program was well balanced between methodological innovations and biomedical applications, providing valuable insights for both fundamental and translational research.

Before the start of the conference, I attended the optional Python workshop, which provided an excellent introduction to programming for participants with little or no coding experience. As a biologist without a strong background in programming, I found this session particularly valuable. The workshop presented the fundamental concepts of Python in a clear and accessible way, offering a practical overview of how programming can be applied to biological data analysis. It also motivated me to further develop my computational skills and provided a solid starting point for learning coding in the context of modern proteomics research.

Among the invited lectures, I particularly appreciated the presentation by Nelson Soares on the combination of red blood cell proteomics and deep machine learning approaches for the identification of diagnostic biomarkers in acute venous thromboembolism. The lecture highlighted how advanced computational approaches can improve the clinical utility of proteomics data. I also found the presentation by Cherine Bechara very interesting, as it demonstrated how structural proteomics can be used to investigate chemokine receptor interactions and dynamics, providing mechanistic insights into complex biological systems. Furthermore, the lecture by Enrique Santamaría on olfactory proteomics and its translational potential in neurological disorders illustrated the growing impact of proteomics in neuroscience and biomarker discovery.

I was also particularly interested in several oral communications focusing on extracellular vesicle proteomics and biomarker discovery, including studies on atrial fibrillation, Marfan syndrome, and colorectal cancer. These presentations demonstrated the increasing sensitivity and clinical relevance of modern proteomics workflows. In addition, the sessions dedicated to single-cell proteomics showcased exciting technological advances that are opening new possibilities for studying cellular heterogeneity and tissue regeneration.

The poster sessions and networking activities provided valuable opportunities to discuss ongoing research projects, exchange ideas with scientists from different institutions, and establish new professional contacts. The meeting fostered a highly collaborative atmosphere and encouraged interactions between senior researchers and early-career scientists.

The conference venue and overall environment in Vilamoura greatly contributed to the success of the meeting. The location provided excellent facilities for scientific exchange while offering a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that encouraged interactions among participants. The proximity to the beach and the pleasant surroundings created an ideal setting for informal discussions and networking. The organization was smooth and professional, and the balance between scientific sessions and social activities helped create a productive and enjoyable experience for all attendees.

Overall, ProteoVilamoura 2026 was a highly rewarding scientific experience that broadened my knowledge of state-of-the-art proteomics technologies and their applications in biomedicine. The meeting also strengthened my connections within the European proteomics community and provided inspiration for future research directions. I am grateful to the French Proteomics Society for its support, which made my participation possible.
